Our top Champagne this year is the spectacular Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV, with our judges applauding its creamy mousse, nutty characters and mouthwatering minerality. Take the know-how of the iconic G.H. Mumm brand working with 100% Marlborough pinot noir and you get Mumm Marlborough Rosé 2017, a blanc de noir which takes top honours in the méthode traditionnelle class. In the other sparkling wines category, while there were no wines deemed outstanding or excellent, we present some very good examples to enjoy that offer fantastic value for money. Italian and Australian prosecco vied for pole position in the prosecco tasting, which was led this time by the deliciously moreish Jacob’s Creek Reserve Sparkling Prosecco NV from South Australia. For a sweet something, search out the rich and luscious Castelnau de Suduiraut Sauternes 2016 – its honey, cream and spice notes make the perfect after-dinner treat.
