GRAVITY FISHING SHARES SUSTAINABLE MODEL

Nate Smith of Gravity Fishing has a mission to preserve the sustainability of onshore fishing. Having set up his business five years ago, he is now sharing the ‘how-to’ of his methods with other fishers to encourage more to break free from industrial fishing practices. Gravity Fishing harvests fish only to order, uses hook and line, and sends the fish directly to the customer. Nate has developed an app that draws on all of his experience to help fishers set up the infrastructure, navigate the necessary paperwork, link with customers and fish to order. Integral to the scheme are two ‘pods’ to provide ice-making and fish-packing facilities and food safety certification – initially in the lower North Island and Rakiura/stewart Island – but with hopes for more in future. gravityfishing.co.nz
